The film can be scanned quickly for any large abnormal cells, such as blasts, reactive lymphocytes, or even unexpected parasites. Rouleaux formation or RBC agglutination is easy to recognize at this power. Under the 10× objective, it is possible to check for the presence of fibrin strands if they are present, the specimen should be rejected and another one should be collected. The presence of more than four times the number of cells per field at the edges or feather compared with the monolayer area of the film indicates that the film is unacceptable (i.e., a “snowplow” effect), and the film should be remade. The feather edge and lateral edges should be checked quickly for WBC distribution. At the low-power magnification, overall film quality, color, and distribution of cells can be assessed.
